Global Health - an introduction, 6 credits at KI

The global health summer course provides an understanding of global health variations between and within countries. The course combines different teaching methods: lectures, group discussions, self study and computer sessions based on exercises using online digital resources (such as Gapminder.org and childmortality.org) to plan and present digital reports on the health of nations. An added value is that the course will include students from different parts of the world which creates an intercultural learning and teaching environment.

General admission requirements
You must provide complete transcripts/academic records of 90 ECTS credits or equivalent in the relevant field of study.

Proficiency in the English language has to be documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL: internet based test with a total score of at least 90 and minimum score 20 in written test, paper based test with a total score of at least 575, and minimum score 4.5 in written test, or IELTS (academic) with an overall mark of at least 6.5 and no band less than 5.5.

Selection
The selection is based on an overall assessment of your previous qualifications such as previous education,  relevant work experience and statement of intent.

Learning outcomes
After the course, the students should be able to: 

  • define concepts such as global health
  • explain the global health situation and the variations in health status between and within countries
  • discuss global burden of disease
  • utilise internet digital resources such as Gapminder, child mortality.org etC.
  • plan and present digital report on health of nations using free online software tools

Course content
The course begins with one week of introductory sessions online and self-study. Followed by three weeks onsite session at Karolinska Institute. Topics covered will be: Global health variations; Health indicators; Health determinants; Maternal and Child Health; Sexual reproductive health and rights; Major infectious disease, malaria, TB, HIV etc.; Non communicable disease; Mental health; Injuries; Health systems and financing; Internet digital tools; Scientific writing.

Examination
The individual examination presenting orally an online digital report on overview of health of a nation. A student who does not pass the examination on the first occasion is offered a  maximum of five additional opportunities to sit the examination on skype.
